A short guide

Know your weave

Which saree to wear when, and how to look after it. This is what we tell customers at the counter, written down.

Chettinad cotton (Kandangi)

01

Chettinad cotton (Kandangi)

The saree of our own town. Firm, breathable cotton woven in bold checks and stripes, with a wide contrast border that can run a third of the saree. Kandangi weaving from the Karaikudi area received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2019.

Wear it for: Everyday wear, office and temple visits. It keeps its shape all day.

Care: Hand wash in cold water; it grows softer with every wash. Starch lightly for a crisp drape.

02

Sungudi cotton

Madurai's tie-and-dye cotton: the fabric is knotted in tiny points before dyeing, leaving a pattern of little dots. Light and soft, it is one of the coolest sarees for a Tamil Nadu summer. Madurai Sungudi has had a GI tag since 2005.

Wear it for: Hot days, travel and daily wear.

Care: Wash separately the first few times in cold water; dry in shade to keep the colours bright.

03

Vairaoosi silk

“Vaira oosi” means diamond needle. It is the name for the tiny, evenly scattered dots woven across the body of the saree, which catch the light like pinpoints.

Wear it for: Weddings, receptions and family functions.

Care: Dry clean only. Keep away from perfume and direct sunlight.

Tissue silk

04

Tissue silk

Metallic zari threads woven through the silk give tissue its soft, shimmering sheen. It looks festive without heavy embroidery.

Wear it for: Evening functions, festivals and celebrations.

Care: Dry clean only. Fold with tissue paper between the layers to protect the shine.
